The acronym LED comes from the English words Light-Emitting Diode. Basically
it is a semiconductor device with a P/N switch, which emits light when current passes through it.
These are conventionally used as the most efficient light source. Their advantage is
that emitted light is radiated in one direction. This directionality can be easily manipulated by the
optical elements directly on the diode.
The diode gets heated when the current passes through the P/N passage, therefore it needs to be cooled.
A passive cooler is used in most cases. Inadequate cooling negatively affects the longevity
of LEDs. That's why a good cooler is a very important part of the lamp or light source. A really good
cooler increases LED's longevity.
The diode does not emit light just by itself, to do that, it requires electrical current
to flow through it. This is provided by the current source, which regulates grid voltage to the voltage
and current at which the diode operates properly. However, it is sensitive to any changes in power supply,
which reduces its lifespan. For this reason it is necessary to have a high quality source which
protects the diode against hazardous fluctuations and spikes.
